10 Killed, Several Injured In Bus Accident In Odisha's Ganjam District

A tragic road accident occurred in Odisha's Ganjam district when two buses collided with each other, killing 10 people and injuring several others. The accident took place at around 1 am on Monday near Digapahandi area of the district.

What happened?

According to the police, the accident was a head-on collision between a private bus and a state-run Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) bus. The private bus was carrying people from a wedding ceremony from Khandadeuli village in the district and was returning from Berhampur. The OSRTC bus was travelling from Rayagada to Bhubaneswar.

The impact of the collision was so severe that both the buses were badly damaged and many passengers were trapped inside. The fire services teams and local police rushed to the spot and rescued the injured and shifted them to nearby hospitals.

Who are the victims?

All the deceased and severely injured were in the private bus, while the passengers of the OSRTC bus escaped with minor injuries. The identities of the deceased are yet to be ascertained. Six people who were critically injured are undergoing treatment at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Berhampur, while one injured person has been sent to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack for further treatment.

What are the authorities saying?

Dibya Jyoti Parida, DM Ganjam, said that an investigation into the case is underway and they are trying to provide all possible help to the injured. He also announced that the Odisha government has announced Rs 30,000 for each injured person for treatment.

Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M said that they are trying to ascertain more details about the accident and the reason behind it. He said that they are looking for the driver of the OSRTC bus who fled from the spot after the accident. He said that the driver of the private bus is undergoing treatment and will be questioned soon.

The accident has shocked and saddened many people who expressed their condolences and prayers for the victims and their families on social media. Some also demanded strict action against the erring drivers and better road safety measures to prevent such mishaps in future.
