Game Theory: A Sports Tech Startup That Aims to Create a Mini Olympics for Everyone

Game Theory is a sports tech startup that aims to enhance real sports engagement and accessibility through technology. The company provides interactive features like real-time score keeping, video highlights, pro sports like stats and on-court matchmaking to users who play various sports such as badminton, swimming, squash, tennis, table tennis and football.

The company was founded in 2018 by Sudeep Kulkarni, a former national-level badminton player and an IIT Bombay alumnus, along with his brother Saket Gejji, a computer vision expert and Sukrut Gejji, a former professional swimmer. The trio wanted to create a platform that would make playing sports more fun, rewarding and social for everyone.

Game Theory recently raised $2 million in its pre-Series A funding round from a bunch of investors like Nithin Kamath’s Rainmatter, Rohan Bopanna, WEH Ventures, Prequate Advisory and Balakrishna Adiga. The startup had earlier raised $500,000 in its angel round from Techstars and others in 2020.

The fresh funds will be used to develop technology, build out skill-based matchmaking, create coaching products and expand the company’s reach of ‘smart sporting facilities’ across the country. Game Theory claims to have over 50,000 users across 15 cities in India and plans to grow its user base to one million by the end of 2023.

Game Theory’s underlying technology under development will use a gamified experience to foster habit creation for users while providing a playing experience on-court/on-field like automated scoring, game highlights and pro-sports like stats using computer vision and artificial intelligence. The company also aims to create a community of sports enthusiasts who can connect, compete and collaborate with each other through the platform.

Game Theory’s vision is to create a mini Olympics for everyone, where anyone can play any sport at any level and get recognized for their achievements. The company believes that playing sports can improve one’s physical, mental and social well-being and wants to make it accessible and enjoyable for all.
